Walking Trip In The High Sierra
June 25, 1966-July 10, 1966

Made the trip to Quail Meadow OK yesterday - except took the wrong trail at Kip Camp and added about 4 mi. to the journey. Est 18 mi altogether (7,700' at Quail Meadow.) All tired but not exhausted. Got in camp about 6:00. I'm getting footsore, kids holding up fine.

Found a real latrine, picnic table, etc. at Quail Meadow. Had to ford Mono Creek to get there but would have had to in the morning anyway. Marilyn much impressed with the facilities. Corn chowder and dumplings for dinner.

Up at 5:30 this morning. Let kids sleep while I baked a birthday coffee cake for Rich. Eggs, sugar, Pream in Bisquick. Frosted with brown sugar syrup. Had a late breakfast and off by 9:OO. Trudged slowly uphill - me kind of holding things up with sore foot. Reached the Second Recess by 12:00 (4.0 mi. 8,500'). There were already campers there (at Fish Camp) so went up the Recess and pitched a wet weather camp on a rock shelf next to Mills Creek. (Clouds came over in a rush this morning - no real rain yet but threatens). Unfortunately our beds are under large pines and in the midst of a congregation of big bitey black ants.

The kids are napping. Will make supper early, all being hungry This is the first hint, even, of rain for our trip. Can't object - the country is getting dry. Hope it gets it over with today while we're prepared.
