Sun. June 26;

All up at dawn. Finished breakfast by 6:30, out by 8:00. Continued Saturday's long, long uphill climb. Took a short rest (that pack is solid at 55 lb) each half hour. Longer on the hour. Endless dry switchbacks. By 11:00 began to look as though we'd about reached the summit. (Got there about 1:30). Had a dry lunch.

Beautiful view of Granite Basin (10,000', about 3 mi from Tent Meadow) from the summit (10,450'). Enjoyed the descent to the basin. Planned to camp at one of the several lakes we saw. The first rest banished all joy; clouds of hungry mosquitoes. We hauled ourselves across the basin looking for a high place to camp. Found one - a hell of a way from a nice stream. But no less mosquitoes. Now writing close to the fire after supper - in a miserable swarm of mosquitoes. Rich has sacked out.

Really beautiful place, but we haven't enjoyed it yet. Cleaned up and washed sox in a natural bathtub near our camp - a large pool in granite.

Marilyn: "We left camp at 15 to 8:00 and started up a mountain (straight up) and after a long time we came to a creek where we drank and rested. Dad and I rested every 5 min. It seemed like we'd never get to the top. We had one long rest where Dad and I ate three marshmallows each and he put bandage on his feet. Then we started again and there was no water. So we decided to eat a dry lunch. Then we started up the trail again and went on for a long time and didn’t come to any water, but came to thousands of mosquitoes. There were so many mosquitoes they were about to drive us crazy. When we came to some water we went farther down the trail and up a hill to where we're camping with all of the mosquitoes.

"I’ve got a cold [all had runny noses entire trip] and I'm bushed. After we built a fireplace and drank some delicious raspberry punch we went further down the hill where we found some lakes with rock bottom and I took off all of my clothes and washed in the lake (which was like a bathtub) and washed my socks and underwear and put on clean clothes. The mosquitoes are driving me crazy."
