Thurs. June 30;

Now 7:45 pm. We've stayed in the Goddard Canyon camp today. Cleaned up a little - washed clothes sans soap. Had much-appreciated oats and raisins for breakfast. Went to find Marilyn's headgear and couldn't. Didn't raise a stink- We're fortunate not to have left more than that behind on yesterdays wild journey.

Explored. Found a big log across Disappearing Creek and checked around the entrance to the gorge. Not a duck - nor did it look passable (sheer rock cliff on the S. side of the Creek). -We crossed to the N side and climbed a steep rock bluff. From there spotted a good start for tomorrow's trip. Had hoped to climb through the gorge and camp (perhaps woodless) at Chasm Lake on the top exit. Looking at the map and at the gorge entrance I guess that it will be a rugged 6 mi; a 4,000' rise, over mostly talus, with route hunting problems. Bet we are not half-way before we peter out.

Kids agree to early start before the heat of the day and glare of the sun. If I wake, will be up at 4:00, have large breakfast (eggs, potatoes, bacon, milk) and be off by 5:00 or 5:30. Plan to plug away at it, with caution and lots of resting until mid-afternoon. Will know by then whether we can make Chasm Lake or find a spot to camp in the gorge. (Like on a large rock).

Marilyn: "We stayed in camp and washed and I washed my hair. We explored and came back, had lunch and took a 2 hour nap. I saw a rattlesnake and a non-poisonous one. The dinner was the best that you’ve ever had! It was vegetable stew with beef and delicious dumplings.
