And J.D. Pooley captures Team Saturn of Toledo
The big
race came to our town for the first time - and it was a winner! We saw
about every cyclist we knew either competing or watching. The weather was
perfect, bright sun, cool and dry and the race organization was
first-class. And Treasurer Steve Sam's new MVW banner was a spiffy
addition to those of other race sponsors.
The
Open-five's race went off first with a big group of MVW's fledgling racers
aboard - a couple of them in disguise. Eric Snider finished first. (Click
the second photo from the left, bottom row.) Snider, 43, ranks fifth in
club race Master's points . MVW newcomer Indiana U Student Dan Lehman, 23,
took second place in a furious field sprint.
The 3,4's
race held the crowd's attention all the way, with Saturn of Toledo yellow
jerseys prominent at the front of the peloton throughout the race. Mike
House sat off the front early on, but it was Matt Thourot who headed off
the final sprint. Thourot, 31, last year's club champion, said the two
Miami riders riding in his draft "Used me bad!" But his smile on
the podium (click the photo above) is evidence he held no grudge.
A set of
kids' races followed - sparking lots of interest among the small fry and
their parents. And, perhaps predictably, you can see three MVW sons on the
podium above for the 10-12 year class: Daniel Kusnier, Chris Brinkman and Will
Grossmann.
By the
time the longer Pro,1,2 race went off Gerry Davis' front lawn was littered
with MVW spectators. Gerry's house, on the course just past corner 4, was
perfectly positioned for a view of the action, complete with jon and
refreshments. Men, women and dogs cheered Will McLaughlin lap after lap
until they drew a one-fingered salute from Will. Will, 26, a perennial
favorite in local USCF races, worked hard in the lead group but was
finally out-sprinted. (See his story about last
year's Tour of Ohio here.)
Casa
Baron's Mexican Armpit, across the street from race start, was packed with
riders and watchers by dusk that night. The main comment among the crowd
was, "Let's do this again, soon!"
The city
of Perrysburg was abuzz with talk about the race in the next few days. The
Perrysburg Messenger Journal had most of a two-page spread devoted to
stories and photos. (Especially of favorite son Dan Lehman. That's him,
just leaving the podium,
