Sunday, Glorious Sunday

Sunday morning at Toledo Express Airport there were bicycles on runway N. Burlington Express planes sleep Sunday mornings, leaving their concrete acreage windswept and quiet. The tarmac had become a bicycle racing venue for the 2001 Ohio Police & Fire Games. Blue-clad members of the Maumee Valley Wheelmen rode out to guard strategic corners, keeping a little group of 11 riders from excursion into forbidden areas of the field..

What with no particular skill requirements for entry to the games, the riders showed, as expected, a wide range of ability. John Stebbins (Cincinnati Police Dept), obviously an experienced racer, handily won the 8 mile time trial a half minute ahead of also-fit Dave Stewart (Orange Cty Pros.) At 15:59.80. The last rider had tooled along in the persistent breeze on the sun-drenched, dead-flat pavement at a pace that brought her in 8 minutes after the leader. The group agreed they’d had fun.

When it came to the criterium, Stebbins made it clear that those who came to race bikes were another thing altogether from the folks looking for a fun Sunday ride. He lapped the field before the 15 mile race was over. Anthony Leshnack (Trumbull Cty S O) seemed unfazed as he eased around the course in the sun, getting lapped four times in the process.

Brent Teall Reports:

The Ohio Police and Fireman bicycle road race on Monday was a three lap ride on the time trial course at Otsego Park. Thirteen cyclists showed up at the start line (a few more than on Sunday). A few minutes before the race it started storming. We almost canceled the it. The riders went under the cover of the Citgo gas station until we were told to leave and then the race started.

From organizer George Gerken:

Things went GREAT. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. All the volunteers were wonderful. ... I want to include a donation to the club to help with some expenses for some thing. No argument....
George

From rider Bernie Profato:

Just wanted to let you know that you and your associates did an excellent job assisting and organizing the Cycling events for the 2001 Police & Fire games in Toledo. I have competed in a number of these events and it is by far the most outstanding job done for the cyclists who competed. Please thank all who were involved.
