Four
of us loaded up our bikes and headed down to Delaware, Ohio in the early
morning fog of what turned out to be a very hot and humid day!
 Conditions,
except for the heat were ideal. The 35K (21.7mi) course was out and
back on a nice road that was very gently rolling with, so I hear, an
overpass. As for the wind, it was very light at best.
We
were able to start together as start order was determined by registration
order. I started first, determined not to let my minute man Mark
Armstrong catch me. Adam Slough and then Will McLaughlin, followed
Mark, both were determined to catch all of the Wheelmen in front of
them.
Willie,
though unhappy with his performance, collected some cash placing 8th
overall in 47:35.
Adam
also finished the money with a time of 48:17 which placed him 2nd
in the Cat 4 race, and 16th overall .
Mark
rode a very respectable 50:30, 37th overall, and way out of money after
going through a speed trap outside of Marion (imagine that) on the way
home.
I,
feeling really good and on track for what I thought would be a P.R.,
finished my 4.5 miles with a bang - a rear flat. This won me a mile
walk and a 3.5-mile ride in Gordy's old Ford farm truck. I
attentively listened as I rode along with the windows rolled down and
straw flying everywhere, to his talk about his friend that rides a
"La Rosa" bicycle. It was very hard for me to imagine this
very large happy man associating with anybody that partakes in physical
activity. As happy as I was to get a ride, I was just as happy
when he dropped me off after telling me how they had just released him the
asylum since his new medication is working well for him! He did have
a sense of humor - I hope.
Riggs
Klilka an occasional breakfast ride attendee placed 3rd among the Cat 3's.
Riggs generously offered me his rear disk wheel, but the officials decided
I couldn't restart.
