A Near ideal July weather greeted the 34 riders who lined up for the 27 mile road race at the Woodville course: temperatures in the 80s, light variable breeze, and the dry weather had taken all
desire for breeding activities from the mosquitoes (picture mosquitoes on a lawn chair, beer in one hand, fan in the other, telling each other it is just too hot and dry).
On the first lap, after the neutral section, Zack Clark, Jon Wright, and Dave Komives broke away from the pack. Zack took the sprint prime ($5 and a tape of Stage 10 of the TdF, courtesy of Mr.
Komives). On the second lap, Steve Clark bridged up the the three leaders. The four of them worked together to open up a sizeable gap. At the end of the third lap, Zack's heart and lungs
couldn't get enough oxygen to has brain. Before nearly passing out (really, I'm not kidding) trying to stay on Steve's wheel, he had to back out of the breakaway group. Steve (1st in the
Masters) went on to win, followed by Jon Wright (1st in the Veterans). Matt Thorout (1st in the seniors) managed to pull away from the peloton over the last mile to avoid the pack sprint, which
was won by Tony Gwin. Brenda Bowersox finished the full distance for the Women, and Brent Teall rode a steady ride to win the Juniors.
