Surprise Race at OOIP
When the lights went out at
4:15 club race director of-the-week Gerry Davis figured folks would have trouble
getting out of
This thing was Race Director
Matt Thourot’s annual play race/omnium. Using plastic ties, shifters were set to
give approximately 78 gear-inches for everyone’s bike.
The first race was a 10-lap
criterium – getting everyone nicely warmed up in the 95º humid heat.
Next was a backwards
win-n-out; for each of the first 10 laps leading riders were pulled and scored
as places 10,9,8 … 1, and the winner of the following field sprint was
#11.
The final race was a
three heat sprint. for 27 riders. Qualifying heats made up of 9 riders
each, with riders from the following heat holding at the start (corner #4 of the
crit course.). The first three riders across the finish line were assigned to
the First Rank final heat, the second three to the Second Rank final heat,
and the third three to the Third Rank.
Scores for the three races were
totaled for overall place. Senior Adam Slough was first; Master Jeff Crawford
was second; Vet Jon Wright was 4th, Junior Corey Brinkman was 14th. You can see scoring
details here.
