The Second Annual Stage Race
See how we scored it
Corrected 9/1/03

Director Scott Main and his big hardworking staff did a super job with this event. THe Friday evening time trial coursed one way along the Maumee River from Waterville to Side Cut Park just ahead of the rain. Steve Clark won that (no surprise there!) but the big news was Pio Apostoli's screaming second place performance.

Saturday morning's 100k criterium was cruel. The first two (of five) sprints were scored by Thourot, Tupa, Armstrong and Clark. (Bonus time was subtracted from their time trial; 5 sec for first place in the sprint, 3 for second and 1 for third). Tony Gwin, Jeff Crawford and Jim Regan escaped off the front early on and took the last three sprints. Of those three men, only Gwin could benefit from the bonus seconds. In the last quarter of the race this group had lapped the field. Only Regan was in condition to talk when the 70th lap was done; Gwin and Crawford were all bent over dealing with cramps. Happily, the race was just over when the sun broke through the cooling clouds.

Mindful of the stress of Saturday's race, Director Scott cut the distance Sunday to about 80k. This race was reasonably uneventful, although pushed by sprint laps on three of the 8 circuits of the Woodville course - lots of folks wanted those bonus seconds. Top contender Steve Clark had a flat out there in the middle of nowhere. Jason Mishka won that race handily, followed by Jeff Crawford and Anton Tupa.

We've posted individual race statistics and scoring details here. Senior Matt Thourot won overall; Master Mark Armstrong was Third; Vet Dave Komives was fifth; Junior Corey Brinkman was 23rd.
