The first road race of the season was an epic event! The blustery south-west winds made the pace extremely fast paced from the get go thanks to the director forgetting to announce a neutral start to the first corner.
The pace intensified after the first turn with top end speeds up to 39 plus mph. The peloton quickly shattered by the time the main group hit the second turn and then it shattered once again, riders were strewn across the countryside, utterly cracked by the extreme head winds approaching the river road.
There was an elite group of eight riders off the front that stuck for the rest of the race. As the scoring crew viewed the race across the fields we saw a lone rider escape from the lead group (Steve Clark) straight into the headwind. It was a futile attempt and was quickly brought back together by the group. The sprint lap was won by Matt Thourot, but by far the most spectacular sprint of the race was for 9th and 10th place between Iannone and Teall. The two stealth riders were neck and neck to the line with Teall just barely edging Iannone at the line! There were several other groups that worked very nicely together which leads us to believe we will have a very competitive race season.
