Criterium at OOIP

The 3rd race of the 30th season of the Maumee Valley Wheelmen was a tempo race, a neutral lap plus 30 laps for a 40km/25mi race. Distant thunder was heard at 6 pm. By 6:20 it was sprinkling with a 15 mph SW wind. The race started promptly at 6:30. Before the neutral lap was complete, it was raining. By the end of the first sprint all riders were soaked. Steve Clark picked up several points early. Then Mark Armstrong kept taking points by a few feet to mere inches from Dave Komives. Then Jeff Crawford rode away from the pack and collected a handful of points. With about 12 laps to go, the county deputy showed up, reporting a complaint from a supervisor at Liquid Air about traffic being slowed as they entered the race course. We were told to shut down the race, that we would not be able to race without a permit that would involve closing the course to all traffic. So the bell was rung with clear announcements that it was the final lap. By then most of the 29 entrants were strung out around the course (only two abandoned). Armstrong (Vets) and Clark (Masters) were equal on points, but Armstrong won the race based on his finish. Adam Slough (Seniors) came in first of the non-points-getters. Corey Brinkman was the Juniors; Tom Wisniewski won the Buckeye group. No women raced
