The 2006 Equinox Ride/Tour/Race seemed to be another successful event.  Karen McKee and Denny Noward had the sign-up well organized.  The weather was cool (mid-30s at the start, low-40s by finish) but completely sunny, with the usual 15 mph west wind.  A group of about 50 riders started out, with lead vehicle (driven by Mr. Davis) leading us off course after the second mile.  Dave Komives was called to the front, to take control and lead the group back on course.  The concern was that if the pack quickly broke up, those unfamiliar with the area would not have arrows painted on the pavement to stay on course.  Shortly after getting on course, the pace of the ride changed, and various groups formed along the road.  Typically, gaps formed when the pack headed south, forming echelons from right to left with the strong west winds.

The pace of the lead group was enhanced by two factors.  Mike House and Mike Busa showed up from the Texas Roadhouse team; Jon Card, Rob Foshag, and two others from the Cane Creek team were present.  Perhaps the only thing that could have made it faster were two notable absences:  Matt Thourot and Steve Clark.

About two dozen riders made it together in the lead group to the turn around point just north of McClure, where they stopped to enjoy nature, remove excess clothing, and take on some nutrition.  The group rode together some five miles, with the pace when heading east a steady 30-33 mph.  Then on the first major turn north, those most in contention to finish near the front split the group.  There was room for only about 10 riders echeloning left to right, with the others going out the back.  Several chase groups of 3-6 riders formed, as the lead group put the hammer down and rode away.

The first chase group worked hard to try to regain the lead peloton.  Before they could, the lead group ended up splitting, with three getting off the front.  The first and second chase groups merged, helped along by Busa’s misfortune of going down in a corner thanks to gravel.  The three leaders kept over ˝ mile ahead of the chase group to the end.  The first finishers came in about 2:30 , covering 56 miles.

Prizes were shared equally by all after the ride: coffee, cookies, bananas, conversation, and a big boost to everyone’s training for the upcoming season.
