The bean fields were lush and the tall corn was all topped out; a few passing neighbors did a double-take; then gave a wave to the gaggle of bikies pulling their cars into the grass on the North side of County road U - the middle of nowhere. The race got fast as soon as it passed the finish line over the first hill. Folks got a lot of cornering practice, especially winding through the village of Colton (and it was said that some folks need a lot more practice!). A breakaway went off early on - four horses plus two old men, hanging on gamely. They were 90 seconds ahead of the main group at the first lap and five minutes up by the end of the race. Mark Armstrong had offered a bottle of wine to one of the first 10 to cross the finish line, which one to be chosen by lot in advance. Wouldn't you know, the winner was number seven, the winner of the field sprint behind the leaders, 16 year-old Chris Brinkman. (We are sure dad Jonathan promptly confiscated the trophy.) Master Steve Clark was first, Senior Dan Clark second, Vet Dave Komives fifth, Junior Chris Brinkman seventh, Rachel Steele 13th and Buckeye Frank Kistler 14th.
