Riders said they had a ball with this Surprise Race. An 18-lap criterium served to rank riders, who were then assigned to one of two 8-rider teams for a time trial. Forced to stay in contact, the teams moved at the pace of slower riders for awhile, dropping off a rider on each pass of the starting lines after two laps. Chris Brinkman finished at 18:29.38 for Team #1; Mark Armstrong finished at 18:46.79 for Team #2. He had lost his teammate, Mike Peiffer, to a flat on the penultimate lap. See how we scored the race, page down. Senior Chris Brinkman was first, Master Tony Gwin second, and Vet Mark Armstrong third.

| Here
is how we scored the race (the same way we do an Omnium):
Points were awarded for the finish order of the 18-lap Criterium, first place = 17; last place = 1. Two time trial teams of 8 riders were chosen by rank in the crit, taking alternate high and low ranked riders. The teams started on a common signal from lines on opposite sides of the course. After two laps, one rider was dropped on each lap, leaving one rider to post time at his finishing line. (Clark volunteered for 17th place, did not ride with a team and was awarded the points of the losing team.) Chris Brinkman finished at 18:29.38 for Team #1, gaining 10 points. Mark Armstrong finished at 18:46.79 for Team #2 and 8 points. He had lost his teammate, Mike Peiffer, to a flat on the penultimate lap. A tie in the final ranking was resolved by finish order in the crit.
