[Here is part of another newsletter, dated sometime in the Spring of 1973]

RACING

The first race of the season was the University of Cincinnati Criterium
held on a very hilly course in a park near the University.

A criterium race is held on a closed circuit usually in a part or around
city streets. The distance for each lap usually varies anywhere from one-
half mile to a couple of miles.

Our club was represented by Dave Stafford, Rick O'Berle and Phil Schiavo
who raced Junior Class. Curt Hull, Mary Tyson, Chuck Connor, Gary Dauer
and Tom Paul all raced Senior Class.

Some of the highlights of this first race were: Rick O'Berle's crash .
during a warm up lap. Fortunately, he fell on his head and was not hurt.
Chuck Connor's bike fell apart during the first lap of his race. (It
seems Chuck hasn't had much luck this year.) Amen!

After helping set the pace for the first couple laps, Mark Tyson decided -
he had done his share of the work, so he parked his bike by the refreshment
stand and got himself a bag of popcorn.

Gary Dauer had to be taken off his bike at the end of the race. (He wanted
to keep going.)

Although our MVW racers failed to place in their events, much was learned
and everyone had a good time.

In case anyone is interested, the Junior Race was 15 miles long and the
Senior Race was 35 miles. Senior race was won by Wayne Stetina who was
a member of the 1972 Olympic team.

Our racers also competed in the Ohio State University Criterium on Sunday,
April 15. They were joined by Bill Hammons who raced as a Junior. This
race was much faster than the previous one due to a flat course and the
fact that three Olympic team members were present.

Again, no one managed to place, but the season is still young and there is
potential first class riders in MVW, so we'll just have to keep trying.

TIME TRIALS

Time trials have been held every Sunday in Perrysburg at 12 noon on Route 25
(to Bowling Green) at Everglades Restaurant parking lot since the first of
March. In general, those cyclists participating have shown improvement.
Although attendance has been poor, our weather has not been at its best
either. It seems that Sundays bring cold, windy (Boo!) and wet weather
which discourages many cyclists.

Now that spring has really arrived, we were happy to have eleven riders
for the ten mile time trial last Sunday, May 6. All cyclists (racers
and tourers) are invited to ride for personal improvement. Three awards
(possibly magazine subscriptions or one year membership) will be given
at the end of the year (only to MVW members) for: 1) the best time,
2) the best time over average and 3) the most improved time. We will
not be going by a oolnt system, but by recording the actual times.

The fastest times so far were recorded last Sunday: Gary Dauer 25:17,
Super Kid (Rick O'Berle) 25:42, and Mighty "T" (Mark Tyson) 25:59. Mark
was only 17 seconds behind Super Kid, but Super Kid's start was a
running jump from the parking lot with a howler. Mark and Gary beware -
Rick will get a good start someday.

All riders have shown improvement. Donna Meister rode a fine time trail.
I did though hear a comment after most of the time trial, while the
speedsters walking around throbbing and sweating, that maybe someone else
should get the hamburgs. Ah..., but Donna came in a solid 40:50, which
by the way was only two minutes behind her son, Lenny's, previous second
trial time (38:10). Bravo Donna!

Mark Tyson said the Harry Quinn bike he rode flexed and wiggled throughout
the ten miles. Others say it wasn't the bike at all, but that the high-
gear, rider was only lugging it. Weight of the bike was: 18 pounds.

See you all at the next trial under the watchful eye of

Lug E. Rider
