7/8/04   Club Championship Omnium at OOIP          Back
by Will McLaughlin

I made a big mistake at the club omnium this past Thursday: I showed up. All the signs telling me I shouldn't have gone were there. I was sleepy, restless, irritable. On Wednesday I had developed an eye problem so bad that I couldn't see going to work that morning. In short, my mind and legs had become like my personality: Dull.

But I had a nice commute on Thursday afternoon and I really really wanted to write another race report so I figured: Why not? But five laps into the criterium I knew I should have stayed home and taken a cold shower.

My head just wasn't in the race and after a while my legs weren't, either. But do you know what was really pathetic??? I couldn't even finish LAST!!! Behold a true sign of loser-dom as I've ever heard. It's a good thing I've got a day job...For now although I may not have one for much longer if I keep having eye problems going to work.

OK. I think you're onto me. Yes, I'm deliberately avoiding a proper race report. Why not? I'd rather see myself in print than actually produce something on topic. Besides, omniums not only demand tactical sense, but also strategic sense. You need a long attention span, a good memory, and maybe even a pocket calculator. But like I've said earlier, the mind and legs were dull and by 1/2way through the crit I didn't even give a s--- any more....But I wanted to stay in so I could write a race report.

These wonderful head games I play with myself.

So that's what this is all about? Why was I on a bad day? Why am I wasting everyone's time? Why am I wasting my time? Too much weed? Yeah, right. Stress? Not this year. Poor diet? Nope. Too much nookie? hahaha, NO! Not enough nookie? Maybe. Well, what, then?

Well, It has to do with the July 4th holiday and the fact that minivans are cramped places to sleep, but they can be a lifesaver when you're fall-down drunk at Midnight in Traverse City. But I'll continue this later, in lieu of the TT race report...If I can find a way to make it interesting.
