Club Race #12 The 2009 Club Championship Omnium was run on a chilly, gray and windy course that was better for the riders than it was for staff and gallery. With strong performance in the crit, the Miss-n-Out and the time trial, Vet Mark Armstrong was first; Master Will McLaughlin was second; and Senior Jason Mishka was third. Buckeye Mike Faehnle finished 13th of 25.

Well, it was a tough job for a novice crew, but they carried it off with some help from the Kistlers and Steve Clark. Coach Tyrone Holmes drove 95 miles to work as corner marshal; he ought to get the worker of the year award. The least we can do is give you a link to his fitness website, here.

Race details are here.

Club race #10. This race was supposed to be the Club Championship Omnium, the first race of the season at OOIP. Severe thunderstorm warnings had been posted, but it looked as if the storms were moving east of us; race preparations proceeded. Just before the 6:30 start time a big thunderstorm cell moved overhead, pounding heavy rain and some hail. By 7:10 it had let up a little, enough for everyone to pack up and head over to Loma Linda's. Among others who showed up to race were old wheelmen Mark Hsu and David Schindley.

Next Thursday, July 2, is billed as a Criterium at Bowling Green, but, if conditions are right, the CLub Championship Omnium will be run there that night.

Four wheelmen traveled to the Manistee National Forest in Michigan for the Lumberjack 100  Mountain Bike Race.  The course was 100 miles of wooded singletrack and 10,000 feet of elevation gain.

Andy Klumb finished 26th in a time of 9:02:43
Jason Mishka finished 37th in a time of 9:22:20
Christopher Wiederhold finished 87th in a time of 11:17:24
Ron Gratop  came to his senses at mile 50 and decided he’d had enough.

Friends of the wheelmen Jay Moncel and Kelly Patterson were also present.  Kelly finished 6th in the women’s field in a time of 9:30:21. Detailed results and split times are here.

Race #9; 40k Time Trial at Mary Jane Thurston State Park. It was a fine night for a time trial (if that isn't an oxymoron).  It was  sunny, calm and not too warm. Vet Mark Armstrong was first at 57:19; Master Horst Obereder was second at 59:11; Buckeye Jim Donaldson was fifth at 1:01:53; Senior Chris Tracey was eighth at 1:02:52; and Heather Mitchell led the women, 11th place at 1:06:35. Mary Jane Thurston Long Course Records: Card 7/19/07 52:38, McKee 7/19/07 64:13 Results are here.
Christian Burkhart with war woundsRace #8. Christian Burkhart Memorial Road ace at Woodville. At left, Christian at his first omnium, June3, 2004  Never mind the rainy forecast, 22 riders headed out into the gloom along the Portage River for a 4-lap tour of green farm country. Taking advantage of the wind, five riders ditched the peloton and stayed at least a mile off the front. Clark took the first prime; Wiederhold took a second prime for the chase group. Master Jeff Crawford finished first; Vet Mark Armstrong was third; Senior Mike Peiffer was ninth and took his place on the Senior Trophy. Rain commenced in earnest just as Director Faehnle was recording finish orders. The Burkhart Family had brought along fantastic prize money, and Bike Works and Mountain Man Stores had sent awards for each category - for which we offer many thanks. Faehnle later presented awards and primes during dinner at El Vaquero. Results and photos are here.
Race #7, originally billed as an Omnium, turned out to be a 30-lap crit when only 16 riders showed up on a chilly, windy evening. The pace was generally brisk around the flat BG course. By the late laps, the usual horses were jockeying for position. Jason Mishka sat in front for much of the time but was left behind when Mike House led out a group of four, who left him in the wash as well. Senior Chris Brinkman was first, Vet Mark Armstrong second, Master Jonathan Hoag sixth and Buckeye Mike Faehnle tenth.

"[Here is] a picture of me at the local Time Trial series here in Charlotte NC on July 30th.  Was proud to wear the colors of my old club! < 10 mile tt, time 22:03, 27.02 MPH..... Not bad for an old guy!!! I was very active with the Wheelmen back in 1974 and moved to Charlotte NC in 1975.  Did not ride much until 2005 when I got the bug again. Tom Paul"
