Saturn/Shell had a full team for the Masters 45+ 43rd annual DeBaets DeVos [Labor Day Weekend '07] race in Auburn Hills. The team was lead by Jim Regan, Jon Brinkman, Jeff Warner, Jim Sarks, Dave Komives and Mike Faehnle. Frank Kistler raced the 55+ race. The team did a fine job keeping the race together till 4 laps to go when a 4 man break formed. With 2 laps to go Komives put in a strong effort to bring the break back to about 20 seconds. With 1 lap to go Faehnle put in another attempt to bring back the break to the turn-around. Regan finished the 2nd half of the last lap sprinting up the hill, closing the gap, and blowing by the break in the finishing straight for a most impressive victory! Frank Kistler finished 2nd in the masters 55+ division.

Eric Snider sends us  a photo story of the business end of the 45+ race last year at Ada , MI , the Michigan Crit Championship. The photos are by Doug Gatto

These were photos from my race August 5, 2006 in Ada , MI . With ¾ mile to go I thought I had first or second locked up, with 150 yards to go I thought I had a lock on first. I was with one other rider (who was 3 rd in the National Championships three weeks previously), and we had 150 yards on the field with ¾ mile to go. But one nearly pro-level rider went to the front of the pack, ramped up the pace, and brought the entire pack up to catch us with 100 yards to go. I hadn't looked back over the final 300 yards, else I would have seen them coming. I ended up finishing 6 th . It was the Men Masters 45+ Michigan State Criterium Championships. Run over a .7 mile course in the village of Ada , MI. We did almost 17 miles in 38 minutes, about a 26 mph average.

This photo [above]is taken at the start/finish line with three laps to go. I was in a break with five or more other strong riders, but we were not working well, several riders bridged up, and eventually (moments after this photo) then entire field was there. In the photo, Mark Cahn (Cadieux/O2; white/grey uniform, white helmet) had just pulled off, Mike Krywanski (Bicisport, yellow uniform) went to the front. Brief moments after (next photo) I let a small gap open up, then jumped across without Cahn's team mate Bernie Clinke (to my right, red/white helmet) being able to stay on my wheel. Dave Komives (my team mate) is right behind me (red helmet).

This one [left]is great. One or two seconds after the previous photo. Krywanski is attacking, Cahn looks back and tells me to get on that. Which I do resulting in [right]

this, where I am at my red line on Krywanski's wheel, and go above red line when I take my turn leading. Trust me, even though none of the photos show it, I did work in that break (just never near the photographer)!

Here is the field coming through 8 seconds after us with two laps to go, with a lone attacker in a failing attempt to bridge up to us over the final few laps. I think I see Ray Dybowski's head (blue/white uniform and helmet) near the center at the back of the field.

In the field my team mates Komives, Mike Faehnle, and Jon Brinkman are near the front to block and sit on any bridging attempts. Frank Kistler, another team mate, is sitting on Cahn's wheel [right].
Right behind Frank with two laps to go is Fred Anderson (who won it, blue/orange uniform) behind him is Jamie Smith(took second, red/blue uniform), to his right just above Frank's helmet is Dybowski, plotting to bring the field up to the attackers.

These photos are with one to go (you can see the race official in the second photo ringing the bell).

No photos of the coup de grace unfortunately, but with one lap to go and a 10 second (150 yard) lead, Dybowski (starting to make his move to the front, just left of center background against inflatable start/finish banner) went to the front of the field, ramped the pace, and dragged the entire field up to catch us just 100 yards from the finish.
