Industry Perspectives: Transforming Television Featuring Univision’s Anthony Viglietti

On April 7, FreeWheel hosted 40 attendees for its inaugural Advisory Services networking night entitled “Transforming Television.”  Hosted by Michael Lawlor, SVP Advisory Services, the evening began with a fireside chat between Mike and Anthony Viglietti, SVP CFO for Digital at Univision, a key FreeWheel client. Both Mike and Anthony worked together during Mike’s Univision days, lending to the casual yet informative atmosphere.

Anthony engaged the audience with his deep perspective on two unique challenges facing Univision today: an ecosystem challenged by a proliferation of devices and business models to keep pace with the evolving consumption of media; and an evolving Hispanic demographic interested in both Spanish and English content.

Over the past several months, Univision has pivoted its own business model by expanding its content portfolio across verticals, and expanded its content distribution across platforms and across any device to deepen their already strong ties to the dynamic, influential and rapidly-growing Hispanic and multicultural communities.

A robust Q&A session between the audience and Anthony covered many topics, but one of particular interest centered around Univision’s focus on viewer ad experience. This is a primary concern across the industry—what defines the ideal ad experience and how to tailor that ad experience to the viewer.  Anthony spoke about the need for experimentation, as experimentation is the only way to find the right balance between monetization and viewer experience. There will not be a one-sized-fits-all approach to finding the right solution. This is the advantage of digital video, unlike traditional television, publishers can use data to customize the ad experience to the viewer. The evening wrapped with a few remarks from Priti Dalal, Senior Manager, Advisory Services, who provided an overview of FreeWheel’s key offerings, including the Advisory Services practice. Given FreeWheel’s commitment to growing Advisory Services’ team of consultants, technical experts and data scientists – the hope is that the evening resonated with a number of attendees, and potential candidates for future roles within Advisory Services.
